The Office of the Commissioner for Privacy and Data Protection’s Youth Advisory Group
The Office of the Commissioner for Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) recognises that children and young people are an important stakeholder group for privacy and data protection issues. Children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable to the misuse of their personal information or improper data handling. To mediate potential risks, it is important that children and young people are educated about the importance of privacy and data protection, and are given the tools and skills that they need to protect themselves and their personal information. It is also important that children and young people themselves are able to provide input into initiatives and policies that will protect their personal information.
CPDP has established a Youth Advisory Group to assist this office in its engagement with children and young people in Victoria. The YAG provides CPDP with a means by which it can identify and address the specific privacy and data protection needs of children and adults through means such as Whole of Victorian Government policy development and communications. The YAG provides input and feedback for the development and delivery of targeted products and services for children and young people in Victoria.
The CPDP YAG was established in April 2015 and is currently made up of nine young Victorians between the ages of 15-24. The YAG hold meetings throughout the year to discuss privacy and data protection issues and to work on current initiatives.
